Beware of Mailers: Protect Yourself from Misleading Solicitations

Caution: Misleading Mail, stack of mail

Eye-catching and “urgent” notices seem to be cluttering mailboxes more as each day passes. Discover how to spot misleading offers by keeping a keen eye on the details.

In today’s digital age, you may already know it is important to keep an eye out when it comes to opening emails, clicking links, or entering codes you receive via text. Although those are great practices to keep, we are seeing misleading mailers make a resurgence almost annually. Unfortunately, many consumers are finding themselves at the short end of the stick when it comes to these deceptive tactics.

THE RISE OF MISLEADING MAILERS

While not a new phenomenon, misleading mailers become increasingly sophisticated as time goes on. Their teams have found inventive ways to gain trust and lead unsuspecting readers to respond in a way that may result in financial loss or even identity theft.

Mailers often claim to be sent from reputable companies or even list names that are alarmingly similar or identical to an organization you may know. This tactic is especially concerning for businesses that find themselves named in communications that were not legitimately sent on their behalf.

STAY INFORMED AND VIGILANT

To protect yourself and assess the legitimacy of mailers that may be deceptive, it’s crucial to remain informed and vigilant. Here are some key steps you can take to do so:

  • Inspect the Details: Look closely at any unsolicited mail you receive. These mailers may often create a false sense of urgency stating “Final Notice” or “Immediate Action Required” in an attempt to stop you from slowing down to inspect the details.
    • Discrepancies: Misleading mailers will often have incorrect links, phone numbers or contact information for company representatives. Use Google to search company details rather than immediately trusting contact details listed in the mailer.
  • Verify Authenticity: If the mailer claims to be from a company you recognize, do not hesitate to contact the company directly using verified contact details from their official website.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter what may be a fraudulent or suspicious mailer, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov to help authorities combat deceptive practices.
  • Educate Others: Share your experiences and knowledge with neighbors, family, and friends. The more people who are reminded to keep an eye out for these tactics, the less likely they are to fall victim to them.

As misleading mailers continue to evolve, it is imperative to stay informed as a consumer.  While the temptation of urgent requests can motivating, it is of utmost importance to verify the legitimacy of any solicitation that can save you from potential pitfalls. Trust your instincts, and remember if something seems off, it probably is.
